Dusk Running

The 8th of February 2009 was memorable for everyone in the band. The one and a half hour session that produced ‘Dusk Running,’ was one of the best and most enjoyable we had ever played. The idea to produce a CD absolutely live, including all the between song chat, had been around for a while. But the songs I had been writing about a town dissolving into night, seemed to suit the idea perfectly. Once again, we had arranged for Tom Fairburn to sit in on lead guitar, but when he was unavailable, I went back to my stand by filtered acoustic, which gave the set a rougher less polished edge.

Of course, the album didn’t end up as one continuous take, that would have been unbearable. It is in fact about half the session. But the only bits that are left out are the boring sections where I introduce the chords of each song, people pop out to the jon and so forth. You can even hear the sound of Ken moving around the room taking photos and his first appearance after being sent of a fruitless search for a missing lead. There are some great moments in the set, Lee’s chat about Buddy Holly’s widow, Steve singing along on ‘This Table Is Reserved,’ me turning into Johnny Cash and Lee’s concluding ‘That is the strangest piece of music I have ever heard,’ at the end of ‘Two Day Pass.’ Something none of us could deny.
